Preparing for Your First Quail Hunt

There's something magical about your first quail hunt—the anticipation of the flush, the explosive burst of wings, and the satisfaction of a clean shot. At Lilsa Lodge, we've guided hundreds of first-time quail hunters, and we want to help you prepare for an unforgettable experience.

Understanding Quail Behavior

Quail are small, fast-flying game birds that typically travel in groups called coveys. Understanding their behavior is key to hunting success.

Essential Gear Checklist

Proper gear makes your hunt more comfortable and successful. Here's what to bring:

  • 20-gauge or 12-gauge shotgun (28-gauge also works well)
  • Improved Cylinder or Modified choke
  • 7½ or 8 shot ammunition (1 to 1⅛ ounce loads)
  • Shooting vest or shell bag with at least 25 shells
